Frequently Asked Questions

At Sundog Solar, we believe going solar should be straightforward, empowering, and stress-free. Whether you’re just starting to explore solar energy or have already installed a system, it’s natural to have questions along the way—and we’re here to help.

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about solar energy, financing, service, and system performance.

If you don’t see what you’re looking for or need help troubleshooting, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team. We’re always happy to assist.

Getting Started

  • We offer free, no-pressure consultations that typically last 1–2 hours. During your visit, a Sundog Solar team member will review your home or business’s energy usage and learn about your goals. You’ll receive a custom proposal with detailed system design, estimated production, and clear return on investment calculations. We’ll also walk you through financing and incentive options.

This isn’t a sales pitch—our mission is to be your trusted partner as you explore solar and other clean energy solutions like heat pumps or solar hot water.

  • During your consultation, you’ll discover:

    • Which clean energy technologies best fit your needs

    • The recommended solar array size and estimated production

    • Available financing programs and incentives (including federal tax credits and Efficiency Maine rebates)

    • How solar can increase your property value and energy independence

    • How solar pairs with other solutions to lower fossil fuel use

Solar & Your Property

  • Several factors determine if solar is a good fit:

    • Roof orientation (south or west-facing roofs are best)

    • Roof size, age, and material

    • Shade from trees, chimneys, or nearby buildings

If your roof isn’t ideal, we’ll explore ground-mounted options. Part of our process is an honest assessment—if solar doesn’t make sense for your property, we’ll tell you upfront.

  • A solid foundation is essential. If your roof requires replacement or repair, we can coordinate timing with your roofer or recommend trusted local contractors. We’ll also explore alternative mounting options like ground arrays if appropriate.

Costs, Savings & Financing

  • Every system is unique. Costs depend on your energy needs, property conditions, and incentives. We design systems to align with your budget and goals. Most customers finance their systems with payments designed to be comparable to (or less than) their monthly electric bill.

  • Your savings depend on your energy usage and local utility rates. Many Sundog Solar customers reduce or even eliminate their electric bills. (Keep in mind, utilities still charge a small monthly connection fee—currently about $17.) Over time, you’ll save thousands and protect yourself from rising energy costs.

  • You have flexible options:

    • Upfront purchase (best long-term savings)

    • Solar loans with fixed low rates and no collateral requirements

    • Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs) for lower interest rates

    • Personal loans or financing through Efficiency Maine programs

We’ll review your options during your consultation to find the best fit.

Installation & Maintenance

  • We handle everything:

    • All permitting, paperwork, and utility approvals

    • Expert installation by licensed electricians and NABCEP-certified installers

    • High-quality equipment from trusted brands like SolarEdge, Q-Cells, and Tesla

    • System monitoring setup and support

    • A workmanship warranty, plus product warranties (many up to 25 years)

  • After you’ve reviewed your proposal and all your questions are answered, you’ll sign a contract to secure your place in our installation schedule. There’s no obligation until you’re ready to move forward.

  • Solar systems require minimal maintenance. In Maine, occasional snow clearing may be helpful in winter. If any issues arise, our in-house service team is here to help. We provide support throughout the life of your system, even beyond manufacturer warranties.

General Questions

  • Once permits and utility approvals are secured, installation typically takes 1–3 days for residential projects. Larger commercial systems may take longer. We’ll provide a clear timeline before work begins.

  • Grid-tied systems automatically shut off during outages for safety. To maintain power, you can add battery backup or generator integration. We’ll help you explore the right options.

If you have more questions, we’re here to help every step of the way. Whether you’re ready to explore solar for your home or business, need assistance with your existing system, or just want to learn more, our team is always glad to connect.
